If you do choose to move your piano by yourself, follow some of these guidelines.

Pianos can weigh from 300 to 1200 pounds so you will need to enlist strong friends to help with the move. It is recommended that you have the following equipment to make the process as easy and safe as possible.

1)     Work Gloves – For grip and protection.

2)     Heavy-duty dolly – Casters on you piano are decorative and not highly functional. The dolly will help avoid damage and preserve tuning.

3)     Plastic covers or blankets – Wrap your piano securely to avoid damage to the surface. Refinishing can be expensive so taking time to secure your piano before moving is vital.

4)     A piano board – used to move piano down stairs with relative ease.

Before you move

Check your measurements. You do not want to move a piano further than it needs to go so make sure it will fit in the spot. Also, lock the lid. If it doesn’t have a lock secure the lid so it won’t swing open.

During the move

  • Always move the piano endways and not sideways to protect the internal structure.
  • For an upright piano, have a person on each end. For a grand piano, have a person on each leg.
  • Bend you knees and keep your back straight.
  • Be aware of the legs of the piano and tilt the piano backwards slightly to avoid snapping or straining the legs.
  • When using a dolly, make sure you balance the heavier case of the piano in the center of the dolly. When going up ramps, use more man power.
  • Take your time and walk the piano’s route through with your movers before you start.
